Hervé Favre website for the 2001 mini-transat

Monday, october 1st.

The weather is wonderful in Lanzarote. Blue sky, good breeze so you don't suffer from the heat. But it is not the same for our skipper which are having a lack of wind.

The arrival of the Transat 6.50 is delayed until tuesday or wednesday because of anticyclonic conditions. It must be difficult for the nerves, so close from the line.

Hervé is still in 5th place. If he remains lucky and careful, he should remains 5th. But nothing is sure at sea. Sailing is a though sport, where you need skill and endurance. A man (woman) against the elements.

Roberto Varinelli was the skipper of the proto n°173. It was his second participation in the Mini-transat. He said before leaving that crossing the ocean on a Mini was something close to a dream which is in yourself. You wait until the moment you can live your dream.

Suspicions rose at the weekend when Italian skipper Roberto Varinelli (Metallurgica Calvi)
position and speed did not seem to correspond to a boat racing towards Lanzarote, the finish line of leg
one of the solo Mini Transat race. Checks firstly by spotter plane, then by helicopter and finally
by the French Coastguard vessel IRIS (permanently accompanying the fleet of 57 remaining boats in
the race) have revealed a boat in good condition, sailing along under autopilot, with all the
comprehensive safety gear still in place - but tragically no skipper on the 6.5 metre yacht.
